George’s Marvellous Medicine

As a class we read George’s Marvellous Medicine and focussed on the description of the items in his recipe.

We then sat in a circle in the hall and each child wrote an item they would like to add to the pot/cauldron on a post-it note. As the children placed the note into the pot they demonstrated how it should be added using imperative verbs – throw, sprinkle or grate etc – children watching this action then suggested how the verb was demonstrated and one child wrote a list of the adverbs used here – thrown quickly, grated carefully.

The post-its and adverb list were then displayed back in the classroom and the children wrote their recipes. Extension work included explanation of what each ingredient was for – ‘a lightbulb; to help you to see the way’.
